Public health measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 has brought significant variations to our daily lives. Lockdowns and restricted movements have led to work-from-home, unemployment, online schooling and isolation. These changes are not only affecting the economy but also the mental health condition of society. This is evident in the 145,173 calls were received by the Health Ministry’s psychosocial support hotline between March 25, 2020 to May 20, 2021 and the number of deaths by suicide reported.
Through COVIDCAREMY, DHRRA Malaysia has supported more than 15,000 families with mental health and psychosocial support during this pandemic. The issues shared by the callers include loss of income, domestic violence, grieving, sexual abuse, anxiety, excessive fear of COVID-19, growing debts, internet addiction, and suicidal thoughts. The uncertainty brought about by the pandemic is creating anxiety, stress and a sense of hopelessness for many, especially among vulnerable communities.
COVID-19 has brought awareness to the importance of mental health. Now, more than ever, we need to take a positive pause – take a step back to assess, understand and adapt constructive mechanisms to ensure our wellbeing. As we are unable to control big events, we can adopt small strategies to address what we can.
